Ten Chicago high schools have begun charging students $5 for minor infractions such as chewing gum or having untied shoelaces, to help offset the cost of running detention programs. Good idea or not?

  1. Good, try it here
  2. Penalizes parents, not students
  3. Not needed here
  4. That's just silly

Gee, I didn't know that chewing gum and untied shoelaces was now a "crime" and people who do it "criminals".

Disgusted I think the cost they are trying to off set is for the chalk to draw the circle. :) Seems they mus have to "pay" a teacher to sit with these criminals during detention..Not that the teachers are not already getting paid...

Give them a tube of toothpaste and a toothbrush and have them brush their teeth.

Schools should promote good health and forget about making a buck.

It ain't a bidness. Me thinks them there schools need an edumacation.

This is a fundraiser, just like with minor legal infractions in adult life (traffic citations come to mind). And in like manner, don't be surprised when these Chicago high schools start getting really hardcore on what becomes a "finable" offense...

Detention for UNTIED shoe laces???? Chewing gum?? When we were caught chewing gum, we had to draw a circle on the board and stand with our nose in the circle.
